Saga is an epic space opera/fantasy comic book series created by writer Brian K. Vaughan and artist Fiona Staples, published monthly by Image Comics. The series is heavily influenced by Star Wars, and based on ideas Vaughan conceived both as a child and as a parent. It depicts two lovers from long-warring extraterrestrial races, Alana and Marko, fleeing authorities from both sides of a galactic war as they struggle to care for their newborn daughter, Hazel, who occasionally narrates the series.
I read this entire series up to date in one afternoon recently. It’s probably one of the best comics I’ve come across in quite a while, and although it might be self-evident from the images, it’s definitely for adults. The combination of fantasy and space opera has been done before, but rarely to this degree of quality and impact. Staples’ art is definitely the star of the show, and Vaughn’s writing keeps the storytelling at a constant state of cliffhanger-level tension. Which is impressive, considering most of the plot revolves around disparate characters trying to raise children in vastly different circumstances that nonetheless ubiquitously reek of constant mortal peril.
Also, I can’t leave out mention of the characters, which are well-developed, mysterious, and generally entertaining. Lying Cat, for example, only speaks to say the word “lying”, and only when someone is lying:
But for the most part, the whole thing’s essentially about families.
I highly recommend it.

The best part is he still hadn’t taken down all the post-its.
